Review – World War Z (Switch)

World War Z on the Nintendo Switch is a zombie survival game that revolves around you and your daughter surviving a global epidemic. This has been one of my favorite games ever since I got it because of how engaging the story is, as well as being able to play it easily anywhere.

World War Z is a video game that was released in 2017. The game has received mixed reviews from critics and players alike. World War Z is available on the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC platforms.

Saber Interactive has shown themselves not just with superb console and PC adaptations, but also with some near-impossible Switch conversions. They’re very, really, really amazing at what they do, from the Crysis Remastered Trilogy through Witcher 3 and Vampyr. They’re also a good game developer in its own right, with World War Z being a fantastic licensed game that I’ve spent a lot of time with on PC. Have the consoles met their match now that Switch has it accessible for portable play?

Hordes of people may put a load on the Switch.

World War Z delivers its tale via several people rather than following a linear storyline. You’ll take on the role of individuals from all over the globe, seeing how they react to the zombie outbreak in order to survive; places include New York, Jerusalem, Russia, and Tokyo. There isn’t much of a plot here to go into, but it’s done rather effectively, with each country’s response to the emergence of zombies. This isn’t something we see very frequently in zombie games. 

The main gameplay is a four-player co-op shooter in the vein of Left 4 Dead. Spawn on the map and battle your way through waves of zombies to the finish line. It’s a fun game with a wide range of level designs. You will have to hold out and protect key objectives at times. It’s at these times that the joy of World War Z shines through, as you prepare to defend against an onslaught of hundreds of zombies. No matter how many times you play this game, shooting your way through swarms of hundreds of zombies never gets old or dull. 

There are also a lot of growth possibilities in the current edition of the game, with seven classes each with their unique skill trees and powers that make leveling up seem gratifying. I simply wish there was more consistency throughout each chapter’s levels. Whereas in Left 4 Dead, your weapons and health are carried over as you continue, you lose everything for no apparent reason in this game. It’s particularly aggravating when you come upon the overpowering Advanced Combat Rifle at the conclusion.

Unfortunately, the quantity of material accessible in World War Z on Switch falls short of expectations. It lacks the Marseille material from the GotY Edition, as well as the Aftermath edition, which included Rome, Kamchatka, and a slew of gameplay enhancements, including a first-person mode. With two terrific chapters, the Aftermath addition was wonderful and contributed a lot to the entire experience. It’s unclear if the Aftermath expansion will come to the Switch at all, but the Marseille chapter will be available as a free update. 

Naturally, being a Switch version of a very demanding game, there will be some flaws. While the majority of the visual effects are still there, they are much blander, with flat textures and very low resolution. This is particularly noticeable in the game’s large horde sequences, when it frequently seems as a one blob of monsters charging at you, with no way of distinguishing between each zombie. I’d also suggest playing this game in portable mode, since docked play on a 55-inch TV looked terrible. It seems to be usable in handheld mode, but it isn’t going to blow you away. 

In terms of framerates, we’re seeing a lot of different outcomes. For the most part, you should anticipate the game to run at or around 30 frames per second, particularly during calmer times with fewer zombies. During massive horde times, though, this may plummet to the low 20s. The Tokyo chapter, in particular, presents some difficult conditions for the Switch, and I can only speculate on how subsequent maps would fare. Thankfully, I believe this is still a playable experience. Unless you go to higher levels, World War Z does not depend on precision shooting or rapid responses, which might be an issue.

World War Z is currently one of the best horde shooters available. There’s nothing quite like mowing down hundreds of zombies in a single wave of zombies. However, since the DLC material isn’t available yet on the Switch, it’s difficult to suggest it to folks who have previously played it on a PC or other platform. Even yet, if you can get over this and truly want to play World War Z on the road, World War Z on Switch is still worth playing.
